What is conflict coaching?

There are many definitions and at its, essence, conflict coaching, also known as conflict management coaching, is a specialty in the fields of coaching and conflict management (Alternative Dispute Resolution). It is a process in which trained coaches support clients in their efforts  to strengthen their ability to engage in conflict and manage their interpersonal disputes more effectively.

Coaches who provide this specialty may be already trained as conflict management practitioners  and come from the dispute resolution field  - such as a mediators. Or,  you may be a professional executive, business or life coach who regularly works with people who encounter interpersonal conflict, and want to strengthen their conflict competence. You may be a Human Resource Professional, facilitator or leader.

Conflict coaching may be used BEFORE a dispute erupts when clients want to be prepared to participate in what they expect might be a fractious interaction. Similarly, it may be used to prepare parties to participate in mediation or other dispute resolution technique.  This form of coaching may also be used DURING a conflict when a client wants to step back and consider techniques to prevent its unnecessary escalation. And the process may be used AFTER a dispute for those who want to regain their equilibrium and consider their learning. Many clients retain coaches too, for the purpose of strengthening their conflict competence in general – not because of a specific dispute but, the general objective of being better able to engage in conflict.
