It will not likely surprise you when we say that every coach in 2021 needs to know how to skillfully support client resiliency! No longer the sole purview of life coaches, this type of core coaching work requires an advanced skillset that includes the ability to both coach to conflict, and also and the interplay between conflict and resiliency. These two concepts have a natural affinity for one another. By building our clients’ resilience, clients can take in, process, and make use of techniques to engage in conflict more effectively. Through questions, it is possible to discover, in the thick of conflict and discord, how to free ourselves from their all-consuming grip, how to gain insight into what got us stuck, transform the ways we interact with our opponents, turn criticisms and complaints into openings for improvement, and evolve to higher levels of skill in conflict resolution. Through skillful questions we can begin to move into the heart of conflict and initiate open, honest, vulnerable conversations that allow people to work through their conflicts, where resolution, transformation and transcendence suddenly, inexplicably, exquisitely unfold. In this session Kenneth Cloke will share how conflict coaches can enhance their skills by asking questions that transform the problem and make it resolvable; or that expose its hidden dynamics and suggest new paths forward.

THE LAW OF RECIPROCITY AND THE LOSS AVERSION BIAS

We enter into relationship with clients when we coach them, and we’re often coaching clients as they navigate their relationships with others.  We frequently are confronted with challenging relationships that seem to only get worse, that seem to be continually spiraling downward. The Law of Reciprocity is a powerful factor that we can use to understand both the dynamics of dysfunctional behaviour, as well as the actions that can help to rebuild relationships effectively.   

 

One of the strongest forms of resistance to change relates to our perceptions of gain and loss, whether that loss is financial, reputational, or relational.  Psychologically, we all code losses two to four times larger than we code equivalent gains, and this perceptual bias often prevents clients from making constructive choices. By helping clients better understand their anchors and reference points through the Loss Aversion framework, we empower them to shift perspectives and make different choices. 

 

OUTCOMES

Participants will gain:

  • Knowledge about two important concepts when it comes to people in conflict- Law of Reciprocity and Loss Aversion Bias

  • How resistance to change impacts people in dispute

  • An understanding of what helps shift clients’ perspectives to be able to get clearer on their goals and make different choices

THE BODY IN CONFLICT: WHY EMBODIED APPROACHES ARE CRUCIAL TO CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

Churning stomach. Sweating brow. Breathlessness. Tears. Conflict evokes all manner of embodied stress responses, but in our quest for a good solution we often ignore these discomforts, or worse — let them take over entirely. But when the body perceives a threat — as it does when we're in conflict — we actually lose access to the parts of our brain that help us make good decisions. Conversely, when we learn how to embody what’s known as “psychophysiological coherence,” we gain access to greater empathy, easier emotional regulation, and improved decision quality. This is not just an idea; it’s a fundamental truth rooted in our biology, and we ignore it at our peril. In this session you’ll learn some simple things you can do (beyond just taking a deep breath!) that turn our most crucial silent partner into a resource rather than a cause for regret. 

 

OUTCOMES

Participants will gain:

  • Knowledge about what happens to our bodies when in conflict

  • Experience how 'psychophysiological coherence' increases access to empathy, emotional regulation, and clear decisions

  • Techniques for managing threats that impact our brain function during conflict
